DMFA: Assembly Mistake-Proofing Examples in the B&D Screwdriver

U-PIN
In the screwdriver, B&D use fool-proofing mechanisms to increase the chance of successful screwdriver reassembly. These mechanisms are integrated and can be seen in the design of the screwdriver itself. To illustrate, the screwdriver uses a fastening pin on order to ensure the correct orientation of the body during assembly.

BATTERY CONNECTIONS
Also, the battery pack only has two wires that become exposed during deconstruction. Minimizing the amount of exposed electrical connections decreases the probability that these components break during reconstruction. This ensures the longevity of the device.

HANDLE PIN
The handle pin can only be installed in one orientation. This allows the hinge to rotate in one direction and hold the hing at specific angles.
Mechanisms within Li2000 Screwdriver

FORWARD/REVERSE SWITCH
The forward/reverse switch works by sending current from the internal battery to a different circuit within the screwdriver. The position of the switch dictated which way the internal motor spun the screwdriver.

HANDLE PIVOT LOCK
The handle pivot locks the screwdriver at any angle between 0 and 90 degrees. it works by pushing down on the lock icon while simultaneously adjusting the angle. Releasing the pivot lock triggers the internal spring to push it up. At that state, the pin's teeth lock onto the teeth on the body.

POWER/MANUAL OPTION
The power/manual switch shifts the position of a white gear within the gearbox. The white gear prevents the output gear to the hex shaft from moving if it is switched to manual.
